Sorakaya kootu – Bottle Gourd Stew (Version 2)

Kootu/lentil stew is always a comfort food and very easy to make. Kootu/lentil stew is a popular south Indian side dish which is usually cooked with lentils and any vegetables.  I love making kootu and it tastes so good. Recently I tried making a different version which I learnt from one of my friend.

It came out really tasty and yummy.  Try this recipe and let me know how it turned out for you.

Ingredients:

Sorakaya/Bottlegourd : 2 cups Channa dal/Bengal gram : 1 1/2 cup Coconut : 1/2 cup Green chilies : 4-5 Cumin seeds : 1 tsp Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp Urda dal/Split black gram dal : 1 tsp Whole red chilies : 2 Asafoetida/Hing : a pinch Salt : according to taste Curry Leaves : 5-6 Oil : 2tsp

Method Of preparation :

Make a paste out of coconut, cumin seeds and green chilies and keep them aside.

Soak channal dal for 15-20 minutes and pressure cook them with bottlegourd/sorakkai , turmeric powder  2 cups of water and little oil on top of it.

Pressure cook them for 4-5 whistle or till the dal and bottle gourd gets cooked . Remove from heat and add the ground paste from step 1 and salt. Let it sit in the medium heat for 10 -15 minutes or till it becomes little thick. In a small pan add oil, mustard seeds after it splutter add urda dal, red chilies and curry leaves. Fry for 2-3 minutes and put this seasonings in to bottle gourd mixture. Mix it all together and remove from heat. Serve it hot with rice or chapathi.
